Openly Gay State Senator, Jarret Barrios, Poised to Retire

Senator Jarrett Barrios, the only openly gay member of the Massachusetts Senate, is leaving the Senate to take a job with The Blue Cross Foundation. The foundation promotes health coverage in Massachusetts.

Senator Barrios is one of only five openly gay members in the Massachusetts Legislature, which consists of two hundred members. The other openly gay legislators are Representative Liz Malia, Representative Cheryl Coakley-Rivera, Representative Carl Sciortino, and Representative Sarah Peake.

Senator Barrios has been an outspoken advocate for safe schools legislation, domestic violence prevention, and same-sex marriage. He has been a leading voice in the Senate for LGBT rights. He will be missed.

From the article: "Barrios said the new position will allow him to make a bigger difference on the issues he cares about, especially increasing access to quality, affordable healthcare for people of color."

I am sure he will tell us more soon.

With a family to provide for we must expect and encourage our gay politicians to advance their careers.

At the same time we must look for the next generation of leaders who are also willing to take public office to look out for our best interests.

To Senator Barrios we Thank You and wish you and your family well in your new endeavor.

I'll tell you what happens with Cambridge. Tim Flaherty happens.
He's 'Born and Bred'. Let's get it together and vote Tim in office.

Tim Flaherty better not happen for this district. Much like Gallucio, he has drunk driving record that he's trying to cover up. His good looks alone will not win. He's not that bright...and he left cambridge many years ago.

as for barrios, if he weren't gay, which sooo trendy in Cambridge, no one would miss him.

Wow, that's one hell of an accusation! I've heard of Gallucio's problems, but this is the first time I hear it for Flaherty. I called his office and spoke to him. He vehemently denied that charge - said he's never been charged with it much less has a record of it.

To answer the question above, what's next, the primary election is on September 11th, then the general state election on October 9th. See here for more details http://www.sec.state.ma.us/ele/elespeif/midsuffolkessexcal.htm

I have to agree, that was a cheap shot. I have known Tim since he was 13 and I was 12. He has never been charged with OUI that I am aware of and he has always lived in Cambridge except while in college and law school. He also currently lives in the Senate district he hopes to represent. Not true of all other candidates.

I have to agree with Hopper. I have known Tim since he was 13 and I was 12. I know all of his family and he has never been charged with an OUI that I know of. He has also lived in Cambridge all of his life except while attending BC and BC Law School. This is not the case for other candidates.

I think Tim would be a great state senator and would be very supportive of all things progressive and the Governor's agenda as we know it thus far.

That's my two cents. Thanks.

I have known Tim since we were in middle school and I know his entire family. As far as I know Tim has never been charged with drunk driving.

In addition, Tim has always lived in Cambridge except for the time period he was in college and law school. He also lives in the district which he hopes to represent. Not true of all other candidates.

I think Tim would be a great state senator. He has very progressive values and I beleive he would be in full support of the new administration's agenda as we know it thus far.

That's my two cents. Thanks.

People should focus on what Tim Flaherty has to offer instead of bashing him with false accusations. He IS a very bright young proffessional, who has gotten as far as he has by working hard for what he wants. I stand by Tim, and will vote for him on Sept. 11th as well as all my friends and family. Good Luck Timmy!!!

Ooops. I am sorry for the three repeat comments. When it did not appear after I hit the post button each time I thought they were lost in cyberspace.

Tim Flaherty has a lot to offer! I've known both Tim and Gooch for 20 years. The difference is that Tim doesn't NEED to be a State Senator - he has a successful law practice so he can do te RIGHT thing even if unpopular! Politics hasn't been his life-he's not the stagnant candidate running year after year. He has fresh, new ideas & he WANTS to make a difference! He's on the offensive while Gooch is on the defensive. Tim's progressive, extremely smart, born & bred in Cambridge, works very hard and isn't afraid to take chances to do things that can further the success he has enjoyed in helping people on a larger scale. He's a natural-confident, accountable, directs his energy into positive actions despite any turbulance around him. He grabs people with his charisma, has good values, he will look you in the eye, he's passionate, loyal, focused and has a lot of supporters and fans because of his great track record and his ability to spread optomism! When people seem petty, he makes them more noble by focusing them on a bigger cause and giving them a chance to contribute to it by supporting him to a Victory! He relates well to people of all races, genders and every walks of life-from a custodian to a President (and he has met several)! I hope he has enough time to get out there in front of enough voters to give them a good look at what makes Tim Flahety the Most Exciting and Best Candidate in many years!
